Julien Dechery follows his class entry for The Trilogy Tapes earlier this year with a haul of late 90’s and turn-of-the-century South Indian bangers for Good Morning Tapes, in transition from atmospheric, Timbland-influenced downbeats to disco, jungle, digidub and trip hop, adorned with copious amounts of Kollywood vox.
Recorded on the fly at an Efficient Space party, Dechery follows his TTT ‘Peekaboo’ mixtape with Ivan Liechti, his deeply researched NTS shows, and that influential ‘Ilaiyaraaja- Fire Star’ comp for Bombay Connection, with picks mined from myriad South Indian film music multiverses, with songs in Tamil, but also Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada languages - basically music that he grew old with.
You can go whistle for a tracklist, but to our ears it sounds like a chill out room in late ‘90s Goa - the vibe finely tuned through atmospheric downbeats suffused with orchestral drums and floral vox, enchanting bits of sloshing dhal and almost jiggy drums that feel a return influence from Timbaland’s Indian obsessions of the time, into snatches of Kollywood soundtracks, a killer sort of proto-brukstep zinger, pulsating disco and fragrant junglist x big beat spells.
